Marketing From the Heartbeat Out
June 8, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 20 Comments
One of the biggest mistakes I see entrepreneurs and companies of all sizes make is treating product development, marketing and sales as three independent pursuits.
Truth is, they are all hopelessly intertwined parts of the same process. And, without fail, the more innovative energy you give to the first, the less time, money and energy you have to spend on the last two.
Let’s look at the fitness industry as an example…
Renegade Profile Update: Joe Jacobi Goes Remote
June 4, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 2 Comments
A little while back, I did a Renegade Profile call with Olympic Gold Medal Canoeist, whitewater kayaker and broadcaster, Joe Jacobi. I learned a ton from Joe in that one-hour interview and on Monday, he e-mailed a quick update that reveals the power of tapping technology to not only generate income from the culture surrounding your passion, but be largely “location independent.” Here are Joe’s own words:
MBA Students Take On Burnout
June 2, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 7 Comments

I’ve always wanted to turn elements of Career Renegade into a college/MBA course, but I never imagined one of my first exposures to students would be as the subject of an exam question for MBA students at a New York’s famed Baruch College.
Well, that’s exactly what happened a few weeks ago when Professor Cynthia A.Thompson, Ph.D., made this the last question on her final exam:
What If You Could Only Market With One Tool?
May 29, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 4 Comments
On Tuesday, I posed the following question on twitter and facebook:

As has been the case with other recent questions like this, the answers were enlightening, especially, because the question was posed via social media, but a number of folks didn’t choose social media as their marketing tool of choice, especially those who answered on Facebook.
So, without further ado, here’s a sampling of the answers…

Always interesting! Now, I’m curious. What about you?
What single marketing channel would you choose if you you could only use ONE to market yourself or your business for the next 12 months?

Paying Not to Be First
May 26, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 32 Comments
As many of you know by now, I had throat surgery last week…
Nothing too serious, but it’s a still a serious part of the body to be operating on (and, yes, I’m still weaning myself off the air-cast on my leg, it’s been a hell of a few months). So, I did my research and found the biggest, best, fanciest specialist in NYC. And, by the way, just like every other big, bad, best specialist in NYC, he doesn’t take insurance and my insurance doesn’t cover out of network. Translation, I ended up paying many thousands of dollars out of my own pocket for a 1-hour operation.
Selling With Shock and Awe
May 22, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 1 Comment
Ever see those infomercials where someone buys a $400,000 house for $629.18?
Or, the one where person after person drops mindblowing amounts of weight, going from a size 48 to a size 4 in 4 months (and mysteriously losing all their body hair, too)?
It’s called social proof, most often shared in the form of testimonials and case-studies where “other people” share their stories about the impact of your product or service. And, it’s massively effective at persuading someone who’s on the fence to buy what you’re selling. One particular form of testimonial, though, is damn near magical as a tool to get people stampeding to be first in line to buy your stuff.
Renegade Survey: What Else Do You Need?
May 20, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · Comments Off
It’s time to tell me what you REALLY want…
I’ve been blown away by the reception to Career Renegade, “the book.” And, Ive also been overwhelmed by the volume of requests to offer something more than the book, from private launch consulting to retreats, coaching, advanced marketing trainings, social media seminars, copywriting clinics and more.
Thing is, I don’t want to offer anything that you guys don’t want…your time and my time are just too important. So, I’ve posted a survey that lists variety of potential programs and offerings that have been requested, along with very brief descriptions and possible fees (nothing is set in stone). I’d really appreciate if you would take a minute and share what’s most appealing to you, if anything, or add anything you’d be interested in that’s not there.
Free Marketing Courses from IttyBiz

So, I’m normally super hesitant to recommend “free” stuff online because I’m a believer that you get what you pay for.
But, Career Renegade extraordinaire, cool mom and uber-blogger, Naomi Dunford of IttyBiz.com fame, just released a series of free business-specific, e-mail-based marketing courses that actually have great, seriously-actionable content. In other words, they kick ass.
She’s offering courses on the following topics:
- Marketing for Touchy Feely Airy Fairy Woo Woo Service Providers
- Marketing for Bloggers: How To Get More Asses in the Seats
- Marketing for Coaches and Consultants
- Marketing for Designers and Other Artsy Fartsy Types
