Want to Sell More?

Last night, I was in a room full of social media mavens and moguls…

And, I was asked what my top book recommendations were for marketing, selling and writing compelling copy. So, I reached deep down hoping to come up with the coolest, newest, hippest, most cutting edge recommendations…but instead, I started offering up titles that ranged from 20 to 80 years old.

What gives? Simple answer. Times change, circumstances change, marketing and distribution channels change, products, services and technologies change. But, human nature has remained largely unchanged for as long as history has been recorded. And, in the end, solving, selling and marketing are fundamentally about understanding human nature, not bells and whistles.

Marketing From the Heartbeat Out

cloneOne of the biggest mistakes I see entrepreneurs and companies of all sizes make is treating product development, marketing and sales as three independent pursuits.

Truth is, they are all hopelessly intertwined parts of the same process. And, without fail, the more innovative energy you give to the first, the less time, money and energy you have to spend on the last two.

Let’s look at the fitness industry as an example…

What If You Could Only Market With One Tool?

May 29, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 4 Comments

On Tuesday, I posed the following question on twitter and facebook:

As has been the case with other recent questions like this, the answers were enlightening, especially, because the question was posed via social media, but a number of folks didn’t choose social media as their marketing tool of choice, especially those who answered on Facebook.

So, without further ado, here’s a sampling of the answers…

Always interesting! Now, I’m curious. What about you?

What single marketing channel would you choose if you you could only use ONE to market yourself or your business for the next 12 months?

Paying Not to Be First

May 26, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 32 Comments

As many of you know by now, I had throat surgery last week…

Nothing too serious, but it’s a still a serious part of the body to be operating on (and, yes, I’m still weaning myself off the air-cast on my leg, it’s been a hell of a few months). So, I did my research and found the biggest, best, fanciest specialist in NYC. And, by the way, just like every other big, bad, best specialist in NYC, he doesn’t take insurance and my insurance doesn’t cover out of network. Translation, I ended up paying many thousands of dollars out of my own pocket for a 1-hour operation.

Selling With Shock and Awe

May 22, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 1 Comment

Ever see those infomercials where someone buys a $400,000 house for $629.18?

Or, the one where person after person drops mindblowing amounts of weight, going from a size 48 to a size 4 in 4 months (and mysteriously losing all their body hair, too)?

It’s called social proof, most often shared in the form of testimonials and case-studies where “other people” share their stories about the impact of your product or service. And, it’s massively effective at persuading someone who’s on the fence to buy what you’re selling. One particular form of testimonial, though, is damn near magical as a tool to get people stampeding to be first in line to buy your stuff.

Free Marketing Courses from IttyBiz

So, I’m normally super hesitant to recommend “free” stuff online because I’m a believer that you get what you pay for.

But, Career Renegade extraordinaire, cool mom and uber-blogger, Naomi Dunford of IttyBiz.com fame, just released a series of free business-specific, e-mail-based marketing courses that actually have great, seriously-actionable content. In other words, they kick ass.

She’s offering courses on the following topics:

  • Marketing for Touchy Feely Airy Fairy Woo Woo Service Providers
  • Marketing for Bloggers: How To Get More Asses in the Seats
  • Marketing for Coaches and Consultants
  • Marketing for Designers and Other Artsy Fartsy Types

The Dark Side of Outsourcing Social Media

outsource

Sometime last year, a friend, established author but newbie blogger, handed me a book and said, “hey, read this and, if you dig it, write about it.” The book was on topic, I liked it and, shortly after it’s release, I posted about it.

The next day, I got an e-mail. It was from the “blog tour consultant” my friend’s publisher paid many thousands of dollars to run her blog tour (I always hated that phrase).

When Memorable Just Ain’t Enough

I recently discovered Edward Boches’ blog, Creativity Unbound, and got so fired up commenting on agencies, SEO, PR and social media, he offered to turn my comment into a guest post.

Here’s how it starts out…

Yes, social media calls for “SEO, PR and content worth remembering,” as Edward wrote here yesterday.  But in social media, content worth remembering may only get you to second base.  And clients aren’t paying for doubles.  Instead, if you really want effective marketing and ROI, social media content needs to be worthy of evangelizing.  And that’s a whole different threshold.

Renegade Marketing: Prove It Or Lose It

May 4, 2009 by Jonathan Fields · 2 Comments

A few years back, I became enamored with Chinese medicine. So much so that I even applied to a number of top acupuncture and Chinese medicine schools in New York. After being accepted, I requested a meeting with an admission advisor for each and asked a series of questions.

Most were easily answered, but one seemed to stump every one.

I had a family to support in NYC and that requires a substantial income. So, I asked:

Can you please provide me with the contact information for 3 to 5 graduates who have been able to earn a substantial/6-figure income?

Silicon Valley’s Wilson, Sonsoni Takes Nod From Pickle Men and Info Marketers

I was cruising through some blogs on Friday, when this post from venture capitalist, author and entrepreneur, @GuyKawasaki, caught my eye:

Free Online Term Sheet Generator

If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t believe it, but Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich, and Rosati (WSGR), one of Silicon Valley’s dominant law firms (as in Apple, HP, etc), has created a free, online term sheet generator. This is the site’s description of the tool:
