4 tips to combat stress while studying

Everyone will experience stress at some point, which can affect all areas of life. People can feel stressed when studying, whether for an exam at school or university or specific training to further a career. Stress usually occurs when we feel overwhelmed or unable to cope with pressure. 

Feeling under pressure and overwhelmed can have a big impact on your studies. If you are hitting the books hard or have an exam coming up and are worried about how stress can affect your learning and preparation, then keep reading to find out how these four tips can combat stress while studying. 

Try to control your breathing

There is a range of breathing techniques you could try to help reduce your anxiety and stress levels. Whether you’re in an exam room, or at home studying, learning to control your breathing can help alleviate the stress. 

A common breathing technique is the simple breathing exercise. This can be done by standing up, sitting down, and even lying down. Keep your shoulders relaxed and inhale slowly and deeply through your nose. Your chest will begin to rise and your abdomen will expand. Slowly exhale and release the air, pursing your lips slightly. Try to repeat this for several minutes until you feel calm and relaxed.

Another great breathing technique is mindfulness breathing. This technique requires you to focus your attention on the present moment. You could choose a sound, word, or phrase to focus on as you inhale and exhale. Your mind may wander, but bring your attention back to the present and try to keep focused until your anxiety has eased. 

Remember to take regular breaks

It’s important to take regular breaks when you are studying. While it can be easy to get caught up in your studies and go long periods of time without a break, this can cause you to start feeling overwhelmed and lose your concentration.
